I too often question why Chippendale’s name is used so casually and often for the most unrelated items you can imagine. It does seem like the cabriole leg often seems to set this off but even that is a style Chippendale borrowed from the French so you would expect people would say Louis XV or even the English Queen Anne period where the rococo leg reigned supreme but poor Thomas Chippendale, who wrote “the Gentleman & Cabinetmaker’s Director which he published in 1754, would roll over in his grave if he saw the type of semi-modern furniture his name was being attached to.
Today very few people are fortunate enough to own a piece of furniture bearing his label. Most labeled pieces are in museums but in any case his output was not prolific. He is far better known for his book which gave vent to a style than for the actual number of pieces his factory produced. However, occasionally a piece shows up at auction like the padouk cabinet that sold for 2,729,250.00 pounds sterling in 2008.
He spent more time designing furniture and selling his services as an interior designer than he did building actual pieces. Also, once his book was out, other furniture makers began to copy these styles so you really want to see that original label before you can be sure it was one of his pieces.
